Install a New Printer

Service Description

Hardware — computers, printers, scanners, and so on — is purchased directly by the user or department. However, ITS will assist in finding and specifying appropriate equipment for the stated needs of the customer. ITS will either prepare a sales quotation or provide information on how and where to purchase the hardware. When the equipment has been delivered, ITS will prepare, configure, and install it.

Audience

Any Mines faculty or staff member may receive this service.

Service Levels

The Mines network environment has the resources necessary to manage access to shared printers. However, not every network printer can be managed. Unmanaged network printers are visible to the entire campus, even if they’re behind locked doors. We, therefore, do not recommend using other than Enterprise Network class printers in any networked setting.

Requirements

All recommended printers are HP LaserJet printers. Inkjet printers have low entry prices but are higher maintenance and cost to operate. Our network, monitoring & infrastructure is optimized for HP printers.

Service Charges

No service cost aside from the cost of the equipment, which recipients will be responsible for purchasing.

Requesting the Service

Getting help with this service is as easy as clicking the "Submit Request" button located on this page and filling out the associated form to get the Mines Help Center ticket routed to the best team to help you.

Support can also be requested by visiting the Mines Service Center (MSC) or calling x2345 or 303-384-2345 during MSC staffed times. In this case, a Student Consultant will take your information.

Documentation

Recommended Printer Models can be found here.

Network printers may not be configured as their own wireless network as they cause interference with the wireless network (HP calls this “Wi-Fi Direct”). For optimal reliability, printers must either be connected to the network with a wired connection or directly connected to a computer with USB. You will still be able to print from a wirelessly connected computer through a print server, or, for an unmanaged printer, by connecting directly to the wired connection’s address.
