POLICIES FOR THE PHYSICS MACHINE SHOP

Upon the recommendation of the Physics Shops Oversight Committee to more equitably divide the costs for maintenance and supplies and to increase the productivity of the Physics Machine Shop the following policies will be installed for management and operations, effective July 1, 2014:

  • The Physics Machine Shop will operate as a Service Center with fabrication fees.
  • The fabrication fee for work during normal shop hours will be $62.16/hour, $88.16/hour for expedited, based on cost estimate worksheets that have been approved by Finance and Administration.
  • The work in the shop will be prioritized according to three categories:
    • department and instructional (usually funded by a department account)
    • undergraduate and graduate research as well as funded research (includes senior design, usually funded by a research or faculty discretionary account)
    • other
  • Authorized shop users may occasionally use the shop for personal projects. However, all work of this nature must be pre-approved by the Physics Shop Manager.
  • Additional high priority work can be commissioned in overtime hours for an off-hour fee of $88.16, this authorization with account number must be submitted in writing.
  • The fee structure and prioritization system will be re-evaluated yearly to see if adjustments need to be made.
