What can I expect when a building's network is updated?
During the Network Installation
We'll do our best to minimize interruptions while we’re installing the new network in a building, but intermittent interruptions in network connectivity will occur, especially during the first week.
After the Network Installation
Wi-Fi Impacts
If you learn, work, or attend classes in these buildings, here’s what to expect:
- “Mines-Legacy” Wi-Fi is Retiring: A new “Mines” wireless network is replacing it. Once the “Mines” network appears in your available Wi-Fi networks, your computer will either automatically connect or you can manually connect using your username@mines.edu email and password.
- “Mines-Guest” Wi-Fi: You may see additional acceptable use policy prompts, but overall connecting to this network will remain the same.
- eduroam Wi-Fi: You can use your username@mines.edu email and password to sign into the eduroam network.
- Connection Tip: If your device is set to auto-connect to “Mines-Legacy” or “Mines”, it may try to connect to the old network in a neighboring building. If you experience a weak connection, simply open up your Wi-Fi settings and connect to the strongest wireless network in your building.
Impacts to IT-Managed Computers
- What to Expect: You shouldn’t experience any disruptions. When you enter a building with a new network, your IT-managed computers should automatically connect to the new “Mines” WiFi network rather than the old “Mines-Legacy” network and maintain full network access.

Impacts to Non-IT Managed Computers
Connect to the New "Mines" Network
Non-IT managed computers will have internet-only access. Follow these steps to gain access to the new “Mines” network.
VPN/GlobalProtect Access Changes
If you need access to the Y: drive, Z: drive, or research computers visit download.mines.edu to download the GlobalProtect VPN on your device. Note: most online services (my.mines.edu, etc.) do not require VPN.
Need More Access For Your Non-IT Managed Computer?
Here’s what to do. Your non-IT-managed computer will fall into two categories:
-
Mines-owned computers: If your Mines-owned, non-IT-managed computer needs to maintain current access levels, you’ll need to have your computer transitioned to be secured and supported by IT by May 19. Submit a request to start this process.
- Personal computers: When you sign into VPN/GlobalProtect, your personal computer will undergo health (host information profile, or HIP) checks. You’ll receive a popup from GlobalProtect outlining security improvement recommendations. These checks won’t block access immediately, however, starting May 19, personal computers must meet these HIP check security requirements to connect to VPN/GlobalProtect.
Once your computer passes the HIP checks, complete this form to request access to the internal resources you need. Note: access will only be granted once your computer passes the health checks.
Impacts to Printing
- BlasterPrint Locations:
- To ensure smooth operations, IT supports all BlasterPrint printers across campus.
- If your building is being upgraded, you should have received an email notifying you about any printer relocations and options for non-BlasterPrint printers.
- Non-BlasterPrint Printers:
- Non-BlasterPrint printers will no longer work after the new network goes live.
- You can still use these printers by connecting them via USB.
- Need help recycling an unsupported printer? Submit a ticket for assistance.
Mines-Restricted PPSK Network
The Mines-Restricted PPSK (Private Pre-Shared Key) network will be available in your building after the upgrade is completed. This network allows for secure, isolated subnetworks for designated users and is perfect for enhancing classroom or collaborative experiences.
To request access, complete the Mines-Restricted PPSK network request form.
What is new about the network?
This network modernization project is designed to enhance academic and research excellence by providing faster, more reliable connectivity, expanded wireless coverage, and increased capacity. The upgrades also bolster network security and better support the evolving needs of our campus community.

How do I know if I am in a building with the new network?
If your building has transitioned to the new network, the Mines-Legacy network will no longer appear or will have a weak signal. Going forward, you'll need to connect to the Mines network. Check out this article for step-by-step instructions.
