Why Are We Moving to the Cloud? Transitioning to Cloud Storage at Mines

Overview

At the Colorado School of Mines, technology is at the core of how we work, collaborate, and innovate. To enhance file storage and sharing capabilities, we are transitioning from traditional network drives (Z, Y, and I drives) to modern cloud-based solutions using OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint.

If you are already using OneDrive or Teams to store your files, you’re ahead of the game! However, if you currently store files on a network drive, directly on your computer, a portable hard drive, or in a personal cloud application like Dropbox, this transition is for you.

Why Are We Moving to the Cloud?

Our legacy network storage systems no longer meet our evolving needs. The traditional storage solutions:

  • Are difficult to manage and maintain.
  • Limit collaboration across departments.
  • Lack modern security features that Mines requires.

Moving to OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint provides a more secure, scalable, and efficient way to store and collaborate on files. For more information on this topic, read our full Home Drive Moving to Microsoft OneDrive FAQ.

Benefits of Cloud Storage

Transitioning to cloud-based storage offers several key advantages:

  • Secure Access Anywhere – Access your files from any device, anytime, without needing VPN.
  • Seamless Collaboration – Share and edit documents in real time with colleagues across departments.
  • Enhanced Data Protection – Built-in security features protect your files and comply with Mines’ data governance policies.
  • Scalability for the Future – Cloud storage solutions evolve with our growing needs, ensuring sustainability.

What This Means for You

  • Files currently stored on network drives (Z, Y, and I drives) will need to be migrated to OneDrive, Teams, or SharePoint.
  • Personal storage locations (external drives, Dropbox, etc.) should be reviewed, and relevant files should be transferred to Mines-supported cloud solutions.
  • IT will provide guidance and support throughout the migration process.
