Zotero Installation - Windows

SOLUTION

This Article details how to successfully install Zotero on a Mines-owned computer using the installer downloaded from the vendor website.

Download the Installer from the Vendor:

Web Link: https://www.zotero.org/download/
Zotero Downloads page

(Optional) Download 7-zip (if not already installed) - Note: Mines-owned computers joined to the ADIT domain should have 7-zip pre-installed.

Important: Do NOT Open the Installer from Windows Explorer or Use the "Open when download completes" option
Doing so will result in an error message stating that the installation is blocked by group policy, such as the one below:

Correct Method of Installation
When the installer completes downloading, locate the file location within Windows.

  • This will vary depending on your browser but may be done by right-clicking on the browser download and choosing "Show in Folder" or looking in your browser downloads tab.

After noting the file location of the Downloaded Installer file, take the following steps:

  • Open 7-Zip from your Start Menu > Applications
  • Navigate to your Zotero install executable (which will appear as Zotero-[versionX.X]_setup.exe) that you downloaded (Most likely in Downloads Folder)
  • Right Click on the Zotero-X.X_setup.exe and Choose: 7-Zip > Extract Files (you may choose extract here if the installer is already in the Downloads folder)

Choose the location to Extract the Setup File. Your Downloads folder is suggested and what was used in this case to successfully complete the installation.

7-Zip File Extraction Screen

You'll See 7-Zip Extract the Setup Files into the folder location that you specified. When this completes, you can close 7-Zip.

In Windows Explorer, Navigate to the folder where you extracted the Setup files

Right-click on the Setup.exe file and select "Open" (Alternatively, if  ou have Admin privileges, you may also choose "Run as administrator)

Setup.exe Actions in Windows Explorer

Before opening, your Windows computer may show an additional prompt to allow changes from this app. Choose "Yes" if you see this screen.

User Access Control Prompt

The Zotero setup should begin to run with screens appearing that look very similar to other common Windows installations, with a few prompts for location and confirmations. In each case, you should be able to hit "Next" until the install completes.
