Virtual Labs - Student Instructions

Attention
DO NOT STORE IMPORTANT DATA LOCALLY ON THE VIRTUAL LAB MACHINE!
Due to the nature of Virtual Lab Machines, any updates to a virtual lab machine will result in all local data being permanently lost.
ITS recommends you save data to OneDrive, or save data to a Mines network drive.

Note: A Mines VPN is not required to access Virtual Labs, and in some circumstances may cause issues.  Virtual Labs connects to Mines resources without the additional need for an active Mines VPN connection.

Registering for the lab

You will receive an email from "Microsoft Azure (azure-noreply@microsoft.com)" with the subject "[External] Register for Lab" with the following information:

  • The link to register for the lab
  • The link to log on to the lab virtual machine
  • The username and password for the virtual machine

Note: If you don't see the email, check your spam folder.

Note: When prompted to sign in, your username will be [username]@mines.edu, not [username]@mymail.mines.edu.  Replace [username] with your Mines username.

  • Open a web browser, then browse to the registration link from the invitation email or from your Canvas course.  Sign in using your username@mines.edu credentials.  If prompted to use a "work or school account" or a "personal account", choose "work or school account"

Logging on to the lab virtual machine

  • Open a web browser (Internet Explorer 11 and earlier will not work)
  • Navigate to https://labs.azure.com
  • Sign in using your username@mines.edu credentials.
  • If prompted to use a "work or school account" or a "personal account", select "work or school account"
  • Select the toggle button next to the status indicating "Stopped" to start the virtual machine.

  • Wait 3 to 5 minutes for the virtual machine to start.  During this time it will show a status of "Starting..."

  • Once the virtual machine shows a status of "Running" , select the computer icon in the lower right corner of the lab to download the RDP file.

  • Open the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) file
  • When prompted with the message, "The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified.  Do you want to connect anyway?" select Yes.
  • Log in to the virtual machine using the username and password provided in the invitation email or from your Canvas course

Using the lab virtual machine

  • Search the Start Menu for installed applications, or use the desktop shortcut "App Shortcuts" to browse to installed application shortcuts
  • PLEASE DO NOT STORE ANY DATA LOCALLY!  Should the lab need to be modified for any reason, all machines will be rebuilt from scratch and any local data will be permanently lost. We recommend you save data to OneDrive, or to a Mines network drive.
  • Save your data to OneDrive
  • Map a network drive to your Z: drive to access your Mines home folder, or Y: drive to access Mines shared course files
    • Note: You do not need to connect to VPN to map network drives.  You may ignore the section in the following link about connecting to VPN.

    • The following link, Step-by-Step: How to map your Z:, Y: or I: file shares on a Windows 10 Computer, describes how to map a network drive to your Mines Z: or Y: drive:

    • When mapping the drive, select the "Reconnect at sign-in" checkbox to have the VM remember your network drives.

  • Your user account has administrative rights on the virtual machine.  If you need to install additional software or make changes to the VM, feel free to do so.

Logging off of the lab virtual machine

  • When you are finished working, select Start → User icon →  Sign out
  • In the https://labs.azure.com console, select the toggle button next to the status of "Running":

Pro Tips

  • PLEASE DO NOT STORE ANY DATA LOCALLY!  Should the lab need to be modified for any reason, all machines will be rebuilt from scratch and any local data will be permanently lost. We recommend you save data to OneDrive, or to a Mines network drive.
  • When mapping network drives:
    • Please make sure to put "adit\" before your username.  Attempting to map the network drive without "adit\" will not work.
    • Select the "Reconnect at sign-in" checkbox to have the VM remember your network drives.
  • Viscosity VPN is not required and may cause issues if installed. Please do not install Viscosity in the VM.  If you are unable to access Mines resources that require VPN, please open a request at https://helpcenter.mines.edu/TDClient/1946/Portal/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=48036
  • If the virtual machine is "stuck" in the "Starting..." phase for 30 minutes or longer, please open a request to have the VM reset at https://helpcenter.mines.edu/TDClient/1946/Portal/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=48036
  • Please be mindful of your quota hours.  When you are finished using the VM, power it off.
