Migration Next Steps
Your new site location has been activated for you on our WordPress installation for faculty. Your new URL is here: https://people.mines.edu/vgriffit/.
We have added your image and some introductory content from your current site on Inside Mines. You will be responsible for migrating the rest of your content to the new location.
Mines uses WordPress as our CMS and Divi Builder as our drag-and-drop framework. If you are not familiar with these, we are offering several training and Q&A sessions to assist you. Here are the dates:

  • April 10, 4:00 – 5:00 pm
  • April 15, 3:00 – 4:00 pm
  • April 24, noon – 1:00 pm
To join a training, please email kfarr@mines.edu with your desired date. Trainings are held via Teams.
Here is your site login url: https://people.mines.edu/vgriffit/wp-admin, and use your single sign-on.
If your current site contains course content, please note that while there is no policy on where course content should go, we do encourage you to use Canvas, SharePoint, or other non-public resources provided by Mines for this purpose.
Please ensure all of your content is moved by June 7, 2024. Your site on Inside Mines will be removed after that date.
If you don’t currently have a backup of your site, Connie Schamaun will share a link to a location where you can download all PDFs, images, and HTML files of your website.
When your content migration is complete, your old website URL will be redirected to your faculty page.
We will add another note to this ticket when we have finished migrating your content to allow you the opportunity to review and check for accuracy before IT creates the redirect.
If there is any other information we need to know, please feel free to share on this ticket. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ken Tandy at ktandy@mines.edu

Hi Vaughan,

I can elaborate on that. Paul was one of the first submissions when the project was announced, so the creation of his site was used as a template for the rest of these sites. Due to the size of our team and the bandwidth limitations we have, we are not able to fill out education, research and publications for all faculty members who are moving over from inside.mines.edu sites. Instead, we are creating those sites and giving ownership to the individual, along with trainings on how they can input content like those three fields.

The text you're seeing is a filler text used in web projects called "Lorem ipsum." It is just a placeholder for the user to overwrite with their content (and it is very commonly mistaken as Latin in these scenarios!).

Please feel free to reach out of schedule a meeting with me if you have any questions/concerns. ktandy@mines.edu

Thanks,
Ken Tandy

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the explanation, but I’m dismayed that my web site is being shut down and I’m expected to learn an entirely new web creation system and spend hours that I don’t have recreating something that already worked pretty well. What happens if I don’t get round to doing anything about it until after June 7th?
Is there no option to create a host for my static html?
Best regards,
Vaughan

Hi Vaughan,

I understand your concerns with learning a new system and migrating the content. Our Marketing and Communications Web Team is available to help with that training and provide guidance as you work through your content in the Mines WordPress environment. We can support that content migration into our primary WordPress environment, however we only support sites built within that ecosystem.

All inside.mines.edu sites will be deactivated after June 7th. Connie has packaged your files and provided a link to ensure that you do not lose anything as you are moving your critical content over.

Thanks,
Ken

From Vaughan via email (including here so all is in one location):

Hi Connie,

You have kept me well-informed of the migration from pvm-illuminate, but I’m now under the impression that I am responsible for rebuilding my web page on the new server from scratch using some web software (WordPress?).

I have always had a static HTML on pvm-illuminate that I understand just about well enough to edit from time to time and it has done the job. Is there any way of providing me with a host for my static html file to which I can simply copy the source HTML and associated directories which hold linked files? I really don’t plan on becoming a web developer and the new system is going to take a lot of time to sort out.

Could I host my home page on the desktop in my office? Sorry to be a pain, but this really is a huge mess coming along for those of us that were on pvm.

Best regards,

Vaughan

Hi Connie,
I’m not sure I saw the comment you made on this ticket on 3/29/24. Could you point me at it if I missed it somehow?
Thanks,

Changed Status from New to In Process.

Vaughan,

This email from the CIO is what people are referring to:
-----
Faculty and Staff,

Do you have information on inside.mines.edu that you still use? Recently IT was alerted by one of our cyber security partners that this site may unnecessarily expose information to parties external to Mines. As we investigated the alert, we realized the vast majority of data was last updated prior to 2017; and https://inside.mines.edu was deprecated some time ago, as indicated by the banner in place on the landing of the home page.

IT will be removing all access to inside.mines.edu on the morning of February 28, 2024

This will include personal home pages that are hosted there (e.g., pages with addresses like https://inside.mines.edu/~username). If you need the files that are hosted on this site, please let us know by contacting the IT Service Desk at xHELP (x4357) or submitting an IT Service Request so we can help you migrate them to a secure location.

Data security and proper access control are ever-changing. We appreciate your help in minimizing access to data which is no longer needed.

Andrew

And here is the response we're sending to folk with personal pages:
-----
Thank you for submitting your ticket, we have received your request regarding inside.mines.edu content. For next steps, IT will download a copy of your website files, assets, content, etc. and send them to you. A member of the Office of Communications and Marketing will contact you to discuss the next steps. Please be patient as we work through these requests in the order they were received. Evaluating all requests may take some time so it may be several weeks or longer before you are contacted. Your content will not be removed from inside.mines.edu until it has been migrated.

I think we may have discussed this before, but my home page

is hosted as an html file on pvm-illuminate.

Somebody mentioned that pvm-illuminate is going away? Is that true, and if so, will my files be backed up somewhere?

Thanks,
Vaughan
