How To Set Your Preferred First Name

SOLUTION
If you have a preferred first name, you can set it in your campus record. If set, your Preferred First Name will feed to many campus systems. (For legal reasons, your legal name is still stored and displayed in some campus systems.) Follow the steps below to set your Preferred First Name.

Set Your Preferred First Name

  • Login into Trailhead using your campus username and MultiPass password: https://trailhead.mines.edu/
  • Select "General Self-Service" (link in the lefthand navigation bar)
  • Select "Personal Information"
  • Select "Edit" in the "Personal Details" section (near the top of the page)
  • Follow the prompts to enter and save your Preferred First Name.

What Happens Next
Once you have saved your Preferred First Name record, it typically takes a day or two for it to feed to the campus systems that are connected to utilize Preferred First Names. Here are some of the systems that will automatically be updated:

  1. Canvas: Public facing locations. For more information about Canvas User Display Names, see:

  2. The campus online directory. Before you set your Preferred First Name, your name in the directory should be in the format "Last, First". The day after your set your Preferred First Name, your entry should be in the format: "Last, First (Preferred First Name)". Search for yourself before and the day after you set your Preferred First Name at:
    https://www.mines.edu/search/
  3. Mines Help Center login record. This takes approximately 2 or 3 days to update.
