Step-by-step: How to reset your MacOS computer user password when you've forgotten your current password.

This process allows you to reset the password for local user accounts only, not ADIT domain accounts.

1.  Turn off your MacOS computer.  Be sure you have shut it off, and not just put it to sleep.

2.  Press and hold the Command key and the R key simultaneously.

3.  Press and release the power button to turn the MacOS computer on.

4.  When you see the Apple logo appear on screen, release the Command and R keys.

On newer MacOS computers, you may see "Starting Internet Recovery".  If this occurs, please wait for the initial loading process to complete, which may take up to 10 minutes.

 

N O T E:   On newer MacOS computers, the screens depicted below will be slightly different, but presented in the same general order

 

 

It takes a few minutes for the MacOS Recovery environment to load.  

Select Terminal from the Utilities menu.

 

 

Execute the command:

resetpassword

 

 

After about 20 seconds the Reset Password dialog appears.

You may close the Terminal window.

Click on the icon representing the user account for which you want to reset the password.

Click the Next icon.

 

 

Enter a new password for the account.

Remember that CSM standards for passwords are:

          At least 10 characters long, but no more than 64 characters long.

          At least one number 

          At least one upper-case letter,

          At least one symbol: ! # $ % & ( ) + - / 

Click on the Next icon.

 

 

Click the Restart button.

 

 

You can now log on normally using the password you just created.
