Overview
This article explains how to access HIVE-produced media content within Canvas after its migration from Vimeo to MediaSpace. It highlights where to find the videos and how to integrate them seamlessly into Canvas courses for easy access and improved course content delivery.
Access Canvas and MediaSpace Integration
- Log In to Canvas:
Access “My Media” Within Canvas
- Open My Media.
- From the Canvas global navigation menu, click on My Media.
- Review Content
- Review the contents found within My Media to ensure that all of your HIVE-produced videos are present.

Enable Course Media in Course Navigation (If Not Visible)
If Course Media does not appear in the course navigation menu:
- Go to the Course Navigation Menu and select Settings.
- Click on the Navigation tab.
- Find Course Media in the list of hidden items (bottom of the page).
- Drag Course Media into the active items section.
- Scroll down and click Save.
Result: Course Media will now appear in the Course Navigation Menu.
Add "My Media" Video Content to Specific Canvas Courses
- Go to the Canvas Dashboard
- Click on the Canvas Dashboard and then select the course you wish to add a MediaSpace video to.
- Click on Course Media
- Within the Course Navigation menu, select Course Media
- Add Media
- Click on the + Add Media button in the upper right corner of the page.
- Click the check box for any videos you wish to add to the course.
- Click Publish in the upper right corner of the page.
Embed MediaSpace Videos in Canvas Content
You can embed MediaSpace videos directly into Assignments, Discussions, or Pages:
- Open the Content Editor
- Create or edit a Canvas Assignment, Discussion, or Page.
- Insert Media
- In the Rich Content Editor, click on the Embed MediaSpace Video icon.
- Select Add From Library.
- Choose a Video
- A window will display your Course Media library. Select the video you wish to embed.
- Click </> Embed.
- Save the Content
- Click Save or Save & Publish to finalize.
Result: The MediaSpace video will appear in your Canvas content, ready for students to view.
Search for Old Vimeo Links in Course Content
- Click on the Canvas Dashboard and then select the course you wish to search for old Vimeo Links within.
- Within your Canvas course, navigate to the Modules, Pages, Assignments, and Discussions sections.
- Read through each section to ensure that none of your linked or embedded videos refer back to Vimeo.
- Note: Use the Ctrl + F (Windows) or Cmd + F (Mac) keyboard shortcut to search for “vimeo.com” on each page or item.
- Review any text, embedded links, or iframe code that contains Vimeo URLs.
Update Links to MediaSpace Content
- If Vimeo links are found, locate the MediaSpace version of the video in Course Media or your course Media Gallery.
- Replace the old Vimeo link:
- Text Links: Highlight the Vimeo link, click Link to URL, and paste the updated MediaSpace video link.
- Embedded Videos: Use the Rich Content Editor, delete the Vimeo embed code, and use the Embed MediaSpace Video tool to embed the MediaSpace version.
- Save and preview the updated content to ensure the MediaSpace video works correctly.
Test the Course for Broken Links
Run Canvas’s built-in Link Validator (found under Settings > Validate Links in Content) to identify any remaining broken or outdated links, including those pointing to Vimeo.
Best Practices
- Check Video Locations: Review all videos within your Canvas courses to ensure that no HIVE-produced content is linking to Vimeo.
- Organize Your Media: Label and tag your videos in MediaSpace for easier navigation.
- Test Embeds: Always preview embedded videos to ensure proper playback.
- Visibility: Confirm students can access the Course Media section in course navigation.
