What is GlobalProtect?
GlobalProtect is Mines’ Remote Access Solution (Virtual Private Network or VPN). This essential tool enables members of the Mines community, even those who are not physically on campus, to securely access campus-based systems that are inaccessible to the broader internet.
Network traffic leaving the remote computer is encrypted and sent to the GlobalProtect system located on campus. It is then decrypted and forwarded on to the destination. The computer at the destination sees the traffic as coming from a computer at Mines rather than the remote computer's home system.
Returning traffic is sent to campus where it is encrypted and sent to the remote computer.
Installation

Using any web browser, visit the GlobalProtect webpage: https://globalprotect.mines.edu. This page will immediately forward you the login page.

After putting in your username, password, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) challenge, you will see the GlobalProtect download page.

Select the link corresponding to your operating system to download the installation file.

Open your downloads folder and run the installation file (some browsers may launch the installer automatically). Follow the prompts to install the software.

If you are using MacOS 11 (BigSur) check the GlobalProtect System extensions box with the installation.
- Click the allow button to approve the extension install.
- You should now see the GlobalProtect icon on the left side of your menu bar. The icon looks like a globe. Select the GlobalProtect icon to open the application.
- Enter the portal name: globalprotect.mines.edu
- **Note: If your connection does not seem to be connecting, click the click here hyperlink within the popup window similar to the image above to launch GlobalProtect.**
- After a successful login, GlobalProtect will show a connected message.
- At this point you are finished with the installation and the system should function autonomously. If you have trouble, please check the following usage/troubleshooting tips or contact the IT Service Desk at 303-278-HELP (4357) or submit a ticket at: https://helpcenter.mines.edu.
Disconnecting
- If you need to disconnect your GlobalProtect session, select the globe icon.
- Select the menu hamburger icon in the upper/right corner of the window.
- Select the bottom-most menu option disable.
Reconnecting a Disabled Connection
- To reconnect a disabled connection, select the globe icon.
- Click the blue enable button.
Troubleshooting
- If that does not address the issue, from the GlobalProtect window, click settings.
- Click the sign out button. Then, log back in.
