How to Activate a Mines-owned Windows Computer

This process describes how to activate your Mines-owned Windows PC to our on campus KMS Server

Your Mines-owned computer uses a KMS (Key Management) Server for it's activation.  The current KMS server is pvm-aditkms.adit.mines.edu.  If you are on campus, you don't need to be on the VPN.  If you are off campus, you will need to be on VPN.

If you see this message on your Windows desktop screen:

Activate Windows Image

You need to activate your Windows license, so please do the following:

  • If you are off campus, start your VPN connection.  If you are on campus, go to the next step.
  • In the Start/Search box, type 'Command'.
  • Right click the 'Command Prompt' app in the list.
  • Click 'Run as Administrator'.

Command Prompt | Run as Administrator

  • In the UAC prompt, click 'More choices'.
  • Scroll further down in the list to 'Different user' and click it.
  • Authenticate with your adit\username_a or .\username_a account. This account should be an admin on the device.
  • Type 'cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /skms pvm-aditkms.adit.mines.edu' and Enter.
  • Type 'cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /ato' and Enter.

Command Prompt | cscript.exe slmgr.vbs

If the two commands finish successfully, you should be activated.

The activation water mark should disappear after that.

If you continue to activation issues, please submit a request for help here.
