Hosting Transparent PNG Images within MediaSpace

Overview

Transparent PNG files hosted in Mines MediaSpace may lose their transparency when embedded into a website or other Mines service using the default image URL provided by MediaSpace.

The standard MediaSpace thumbnail URL does not preserve the PNG's alpha channel and may display transparent areas as solid black or white. To preserve transparency, use the Kaltura raw image URL instead.

Get the Image Entry ID

Each image uploaded to MediaSpace has a unique Entry ID that must be included in the raw image URL.

  1. Locate the PNG image in Mines MediaSpace.
  2. Right-click the image and select Open Image in New Tab.
  3. In the new browser tab, locate the image URL in the address bar.
    The URL should look similar to:
    https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/5642122/sp/564212200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_wdpx6nrs
  4. Locate the value immediately following entry_id/.
    In this example, the Entry ID is: 1_wdpx6nrs

Important: Do not use the cfvod.kaltura.com thumbnail URL as the image source when transparency is required. This URL may replace transparent portions of the PNG with a solid black or white background.

Create the Transparent PNG URL

Use the following URL structure to access the original PNG while preserving its transparency:

https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/5642122/raw/entry_id/ENTRY_ID

Replace ENTRY_ID with the Entry ID identified in the previous section.

❌ For example, if the MediaSpace image URL is: 

https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/5642122/sp/564212200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_wdpx6nrs

✅ Change it to this instead: 

https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/5642122/raw/entry_id/1_wdpx6nrs

The raw image URL can then be used as the image source <img src> when embedding the PNG into a supported Mines website or service.

Verify the Partner ID

The value following /p/ is the Kaltura Partner ID. For Mines MediaSpace, this will normally be: 5642122

Compare this value with the /p/ value in the original MediaSpace image URL.

  • If the original URL contains /p/5642122/, no change is necessary.
  • If the original URL contains a different value, replace 5642122 in the raw image URL with that value.

Example HTML

When embedding the transparent PNG directly into HTML, use the raw image URL as the src value:

<img src="https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/5642122/raw/entry_id/1_wdpx6nrs" alt="Description of image">

Replace the Entry ID with the Entry ID for your image and provide appropriate alternative text when the image conveys meaningful information.
