Save a copy of your school notes to your OneNote notebook 

As a student with an Microsoft 365 account, your OneNote notes are stored in OneDrive. This enables you to save a personal copy of your notes and reference them in the future.

Get started

  1. Make sure that you have a personal Microsoft account. That means an account that ends in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com. If you don’t have an account, you can create one at https://signup.live.com/signup. 

  2. Sign in to OneNote with both your school and personal accounts. Navigate here for instructions on how to sign in to multiple accounts on OneNote. 

  3.  Create a new notebook using your personal account. Make a note of the name of this new notebook.  This new notebook is where you will save your personal a copy of the notes that are currently in your school account.  Instructions for how to create a new OneNote notebook using a specific account can be found here.

Copy notes from your school account to your personal account 

  1. Open the OneNote app. 

  2. Navigate to the notebook with the notes you'd like to copy over.

  3. Right-click on the page that you want to copy, then select Move/Copy from the pop-up menu.

  4. A pop-up menu titled Move/Copy Page will appear, where you can choose which notebook you want to copy the page into. Select the new personal notebook you created in Step 3 and then select the Copy button at the bottom of the pop-up menu.

  5. You can now navigate to the notebook you created using your personal account to view the new copy of that page.

  6. Repeat the above process for any pages you want to copy into your personal account.

Copy class materials from a OneNote Class Notebook

If the notes that you want to copy are part of a OneNote Class Notebook, in addition to your own notes, you can also choose to make a copy of the supporting class materials including the class Content Library and Collaboration Space.  Below are steps on how to make a copy of a Class Notebook and save it to your personal Microsoft account.

Copy a Class Notebook from your school account to your personal account (OneNote for the web).

  1. Sign into your school’s Microsoft 365 portal using your student credentials (your_name@yourschool.edu).

  2. Select OneNote to open the Notebooks list screen.

  3. From the Notebook list screen, select the heading titled “Class Notebooks”.

  4. If you do not see a heading labeled “Class Notebooks,” then it’s likely that the class notes you are looking for are in a regular OneNote notebook. In this case, follow the instructions in previous set of instructions for copying notes from your school account to your personal account.

  5. From the list of OneNote Class Notebooks, right click on the one that you wish to copy to your personal Microsoft account and select Save a Copy from the pop-up menu.

  6. A new window will appear prompting you to choose where you want to save a copy of this notebook.  Choose the option to “Save to a Microsoft Account”.

  7. If you were not already signed into your personal Microsoft account, you will be prompted to sign into it now.

  8. After logging into your personal Microsoft account, you will be presented with a screen requesting permission for the OneNote.com service to access your personal account. Choose “Yes” to allow the OneNote.com service to save a copy to your personal Microsoft account.

  9. The next screen will ask you to confirm that you wish to make a copy of the notebook.  Choose “Copy notebook” from the confirmation screen.

  10. Your class notes and the supporting materials from the Class Notebook have now been copied to your personal Microsoft account.

Download a copy of your OneDrive files 

After the school year is over, or if you are transferring to another school, you might want to save a personal copy of some or all of these documents so that you can reference them later.  See how you can do this here

Important: The Notebooks folder in your OneDrive is view-only. In order to save the contents of your OneNote notebooks elsewhere, see above. 

Download a copy of your Teams class assignments

The Assignments tool is a feature within Teams that allows students and teachers to easily organize class assignments. When a you submit an assignment for a class, it is stored in the Assignments tab within that specific class. 

You can view all your class Assignments for all your classes by clicking the Assignments icon in the side panel of Teams. Follow the instructions below to download a copy of an assignment:

  1. Sign into your school’s Microsoft 365 portal using your student credentials(your_name@yourschool.edu).

  2. Open Teams.

  3. Select the Assignments icon in the side bar of Teams.

  4. Select the assignment card to open the assignment you would like to save.

  5. Select any item listed in the section labeled My Work to open it and use the options in the File menu under Save As to download a copy to your personal device.

  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each assignment you want to download.
