Types of IT Projects at Mines

Body

There are two types of technology projects at Mines: Strategic and Operational

IT Strategic Projects

  • Directly aligns with Mines’ strategic objectives.
  • Can transform or grow Mines’ capabilities by replacing old or implementing new technology solutions.
  • These projects can vary in size, investment, and complexity.

IT Strategic Projects are reviewed and approved by the IT CPC and tracked in our ticketing system TeamDynamix (TDX).

Examples of a Strategic Project: Workday, Data Warehouse, CRM, BlasterCard, Network Modernization, TRAIL, VDI.

Operational Projects

Operational Projects improve current operations by reducing costs, getting work done more efficiently, addressing compliance risks, or producing a better customer experience. These projects replace or enhance current technology solutions, infrastructure, and services.

There are two types of IT Operational Projects: Big P and Little p projects.

Big P

  • Focused on enhancing or stabilizing current technology, infrastructure, and processes needed for day-to-day operations.
  • Big P projects are prioritized and approved by ITLT and tracked in TDX.
  • Examples of a Big P project: Control of Admin Rights, Workday post go-live support, Service Desk Redesign, Banner Student to the Cloud.

Among the triggers that can cause a Big P project are:

  • Has Capital Expenses
  • Implementation costs > $20k
  • RFP is required for technology changes
  • Over 100 hours of IT resources
  • Over 6 months in duration
  • Medium to High level of complexity in data migrations, integrations, change management, and/or implementation risks.

Little p

  • Focused on enhancing or stabilizing current technology, infrastructure, and processes needed for day-to-day operations.
  • Little p projects are prioritized and approved by the IT Directors/Managers.
  • Examples of a Little p project: Report/Dashboard/Forms development.

Among the characteristics of a Little p project are:

  • No Capital Expenses
  • Implementation costs < $20k and budgeted
  • RFP is not required for technology changes
  • Under 100 hours of IT resources
  • Under 6 months in duration
  • Low level of complexity in data migrations, integrations, change management, and/or implementation risks.
