Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching

Summary

Microsoft Imagine has been moved to Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching. This article provides information on accessing and downloading most Microsoft products for free via the new interface, including Microsoft Windows 10, Windows Server 2019, and Visual Studio Enterprise 2017.

Body

Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching is a collection of software meant to provide tools to departments, faculty, and students to expand their study of software development and testing. Several of the provided tools are listed below, however for the full list of available tools you should log in to the portal following the instructions below.

Azure Dev Tools for Teaching includes a wide selection of software including but not limited to the following:

  • Microsoft Project
  • Windows 10 Education
  • Windows 11 Education
  • Windows Server (Essentials, Standard, and Datacenter)
  • SQL Server
  • Visio
  • Visual Studio Community
  • Visual Studio for Mac
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server

NOTE: Microsoft Office is obtained at https://portal.office.com and is not available via Azure Dev Tools for Teaching.

How to Access

To get started, Microsoft Azure Dev Tools can be accessed using this link: https://aka.ms/devtoolsforteaching

To access the software list and download your desired product:

  1. Follow the link above, then click the blue "Sign In" button on the right side
  2. This will direct you to a Microsoft account login page. Enter your Mines username and password.
  3. For security reasons, you may be prompted to verify your identity with either a phone call or a text message. If prompted, follow the instructions on screen. 
  4. After a short wait, you will be directed to the "Get Started" page of the Azure dashboard.
  5. Click the "Software" link in the second column on the left.
  6. Select the name of the software you want. Searching can be done by the search box and filters directly above the software list.
    • NOTE: This list includes a lot of software. A combination of keyword search and filters may be required to find the exact product you want.
    • NOTE: Windows 10 has multiple versions available. Windows 10 Education, Version xxxx is the currently recommended version to obtain.
  7. A panel on the right will open. For most products, there will be a description, a few attributes of this software version, a blue "View Key" button, and two blue buttons at the very bottom, one "Download" and one "Cancel". The "View Key" button will reveal a product key to activate the product, while "Download" will download the installer for the product. 
    • NOTE: Many products are provided in standard .iso disc image format. This can be written to a USB drive via tools such as Rufus or mounted as a virtual DVD drive in Windows 10.
    • NOTE: You are only provided one key per product. Every time you view a key for a product you will receive the same key.

Installation will vary depending on what product you are trying to install.
