Canvas Integrations (LTIs)

Canvas integrations are also known as Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI). LTI is an integration standard that allows third-party tools to connect with learning management systems such as Canvas. 

The use and installation of a Canvas LTI must first be approved through our Software Review. Software Reviews for LTIs must be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the start of the term you would like to use them in.  

If requesting an application to be installed in Canvas, review the inventory of Canvas LTI Plugins [forthcoming] to compare existing options. 

Please note: LTIs must be compatible with the Mines Canvas Test environment. (Please confirm with the vendor they can accommodate this before submitting a Software Review request.) If a Canvas Test installation is unavailable, the LTI will be incompatible with Mines IT security protocol and not approved for installation in Canvas.    

Members of the Mines IT organization assess software and LTIs for the items listed below.  This process can take up to 4 weeks.  

  • Accessibility 

  • Copyright and ownership of content 

  • FERPA 

  • Licensing 

  • Installation requirements (all of Canvas, sub-account in Canvas or course-level) 

  • Privacy 

  • Security 

If the Software Review is approved the following will occur. This requires 2-3 weeks: 

  • The LTI will be installed in Canvas Test by our Canvas Administrator. This often includes meeting with the vendor to setup the LTI which may require additional time.  

  • If functional and there is no negative impact on Canvas Test, the Canvas Administrator will submit a Request for Change (RFC) to the IT Change Advisory Board (CAB). 

  • RFCs are due by noon on Friday with review by the Pre-Change Advisory Board (Pre-CAB) the following Monday afternoon.  

  • If approved by Pre-CAB the RFC is then reviewed by the IT Change Advisory Board (CAB) on Wednesday afternoon. 

  • Pending approval by CAB installations are typically completed that Friday or following Monday. Additional time may be required if technical support is needed from the vendor.
