How to Connect to the "Mines" Network with personal devices

1.0 Audience

This article is for any Mines user with an active account.

2.0 Purpose

The purpose of this knowledge base article is to provide step-by-step instructions for connecting to the "Mines" network across campus and resident halls from personal devices. It includes steps for both wireless (Wi-Fi) and wired connections as well as instructions for multiple operating systems and devices, such as WindowsMacOS, Linux (Ubuntu), iOS, Android, and Chromebook.

3.0 Instructions


 Wireless Network Connections (Wi-Fi) to "Mines"

Connect your Windows device

  1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen to open the Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Select the Mines Wi-Fi network.
  3. When prompted, enter your Mines email address and password.
  4. If your username (email) and password are correct, a certificate warning will pop up. Click Connect to complete your connection to the network. (Optionally, click "Show certificate details" if you would like to verify the certificate.)
  5. Click Connect to finalize your connection to the "Mines" Wi-Fi network.

Connect your MacOS device

  1. In your Wi-Fi settings, select the Mines Wi-Fi network.
  2. Enter your Mines email address and password.
  3. If your account name (email) and password are correct, a certificate warning will pop up. Click the Continue button to complete your connection to the network. (Optionally, click "More details" if you would like to verify the certificate.)
  4. Click Trust to complete your connection. If prompted, enter the administrator password of the machine you are using to confirm.
  5. Enjoy your secure connectivity to the "Mines" Wi-Fi network.
Note:  If you experience issues reaching websites after authenticating, you may need to adjust your Limit IP Address Tracking settings:
1.  Go to System Settings > Wi-Fi.  Locate the Mines Wi-Fi network and click Details.
2. Scroll to the Limit Private IP address tracking settings and toggle that to Off.

Connect your iOS device (iPhone, iPad)

  1. Under your Wi-Fi settings, select the Mines Wi-Fi network.
  2. Enter your Mines email address and password.
  3. If your username (email) and password are correct, a certificate warning will pop up. Click Trust to complete your connection. (Optionally, click "More details" to verify the certificate.)
  4. Click Trust to complete your connection to the "Mines" Wi-Fi network.
Note:  If you experience issues reaching websites after authenticating, you may need to adjust your Limit IP Address Tracking settings:
1.  Go to System Settings > Wi-Fi.  Locate the Mines Wi-Fi network and click Details.
2. Scroll to the Limit Private IP address tracking settings and toggle that to Off.

Connect your Android device 

Note: Android operating systems may differ depending on your device interface. This article is generalized and your screen options may vary. If you experience difficulty, please contact the IT Service Desk.
  1. On your phone, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the quick settings drop-down menu. Tap the Wi-Fi icon to turn Wi-Fi on (ensure it is active and not greyed out).
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi drop-down arrow below the icon to open the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
  3. Select the Mines network.
  4. In the pop-up window, populate the necessary fields to match the settings below, then tap Connect:
    EAP method: PEAP
    Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
    CA Certificate: Use system certificates
    Domain: mines.edu
    Anonymous Identity: (MAKE SURE THIS IS BLANK)
    Identity: username@mines.edu
    Password: Your Mines password
  5. You should now be connected to the "Mines" wireless network.

Connect your Linux (Ubuntu) device 

  1. Click on the Applications icon.
  2. Go to Settings, then select Wi-Fi from the left banner.
  3. Select the Mines network.
  4. In the pop-up window, populate the necessary fields to match the settings below, then tap Connect:
    Wi-Fi Security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
    Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    Anonymous Identity: (MAKE SURE THIS IS BLANK)
    Domain: mines.edu
    CA Certificate: Select the drop down, "Select from file...", Ctrl-L, type "/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt", click "Select"
    Inner authentication: MSCHAPv2
    Username: Your full Mines email address
    Password: Your Mines password
  5. You should now be connected to the "Mines" wireless network.

Connect your Chromebook

  1. On your Chromebook, click on the quick settings panel at the bottom right of your screen.
  2. Click the Wi-Fi button.
  3. A list of available wireless networks will appear. Select Mines.
  4. In the popup window, populate the necessary fields to match the settings below, then click the Connect button:
    EAP method: PEAP
    Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
    Server CA certificate: Do not check
    Identity: Enter your Mines email address
    Password: Your Mines password
    Anonymous Identity: (MAKE SURE THIS IS BLANK)
  5. You should now be connected to the Mines Wi-Fi network.



 Wired Network Connections (Ethernet Ports)
 

Connect your Windows device to the "Mines" Wired Network

Ensure you have connected your computer to the network port with an Ethernet cable before starting these steps.

  1. From the Windows Start screen, type services and press Enter to search for and open Windows Services.
  2. Right-click on Wired AutoConfig and select Properties.
  3. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  4. Click Start and wait for the service to start.
  5. Click Apply and then click OK.
  6. A login window prompt will appear. Enter your Mines email address and password.*
  7. You should now be connected to the "Mines" network.

* If you are not shown a login prompt in Step 6 above, follow these steps generate that prompt to enter your Mines credentials:

1. Open Network Connections:
Press the Windows + R keys at the same time. Then the Run field, type ncpa.cpl, and press Enter.

2. Open Adapter Properties:
Right-click your Ethernet network adapter and select Properties.

3. Configure Authentication Tab:
Select the Authentication tab at the top. Ensure Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication is checked.

4. Disable Automatically Using Windows Logon Credentials:
Set the network authentication method to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) and click Settings. Under Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2), click Configure... and uncheck "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)". Click OK.

5. Specify User Authentication Mode:
Back on the Authentication tab, click Additional Settings.... Check Specify authentication mode, select User authentication from the drop down, then click Save Credentials (or click OK to force a fresh prompt).

6.Apply and Prompt:
Click OK on all open windows. Unplug and replug the Ethernet cable or disable/enable the adapter to trigger the login pop up asking for the Mines email and password.

Connect your MacOS device to "Mines" Wired Network

  1. Go to System Settings on your MacOS device.
  2. Click Network, then click Ethernet  or Thunderbolt.
  3. Click the Details button on the right.
  4. Select 802.1x and ensure Enable automatic connection is toggled ON.
  5. Click OK and exit System Settings.
  6. Plug in your Ethernet cable to receive a credentials pop-up window.
  7. Enter your Mines email address and password, then click Join.
  8. You should now be connected to the "Mines" network.
Note:  If you experience issues reaching websites after authenticating, you may need to adjust your Limit IP Address Tracking settings:
1.  Go to System Settings > Wi-Fi.  Locate the Mines Wi-Fi network and click Details.
2. Scroll to the Limit Private IP address tracking settings and toggle that to Off.

Connect your Linux (Ubuntu) device to "Mines" Wired Network

  1. Click on the Applications icon.
  2. Use the search bar to find and open Advanced Network Configuration.
  3. Click the + button on the window that appears to create a new connection.
  4. Select Ethernet from the drop-down menu, then click Create.
  5. Name your connection 802.1x and navigate to the 802.1x Security tab.
  6. Check the Use 802.1x security for this connection checkbox.
  7. Configure the connection using your Mines email address and password alongside standard PEAP/MSCHAPv2 settings, then click Save.
  8. To activate the connection, click on the Network Manager icon in your system bar.
  9. Click on your Wired connection.
  10. Select the 802.1x connection you created and wait 15–20 seconds to establish connection.
  11. You should now be authenticated to the "Mines" 802.1x wired network.

4.0 Definitions

  • 802.1x: A network authentication protocol used for secure wired and wireless connections.
  • SSID: Service Set Identifier; the broadcast name of a Wi-Fi network.
  • EAP: Extensible Authentication Protocol used for secure network authentication.
  • PEAP: Protected EAP, a protocol method for encrypting authentication credentials.
  • MSCHAPv2: Microsoft Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol version 2.
