Step-by-Step: How to transfer ownership of files and folders contained in a personal OneDrive storage location to another OneDrive user

Summary

In cases where a student or faculty member is leaving Mines and has files stored on OneDrive that must be left behind for others to access, this process explains how to accomplish a transfer.

Body

Prerequisites:  You must be the current owner of the files in order to make these changes.

1. Current owner/editor should open a web browser and navigate to his or her OneDrive file library.

2. Right-click on the folder that needs to be transferred.

3. A menu opens. Select "Manage access"

4. A menu appears on the right-hand edge of the screen.

5. Click on the + symbol next to "Direct access".

6. Enter the Mines email address of the person to whom ownership is being transferred.

7. Click on the pencil icon and ensure that it is set to "Can edit - Make any changes".

8. Click on "Grant Access".

9. The new owner/editor will now see the folder in their own OneDrive file library under the Shared tab on the left-hand menu.

10. Ask the new owner/editor to download the contents of the folder and transfer those contents to a new folder that they create within their own OneDrive account.

11. The new owner/editor can now share the new files/folder in his or her OneDrive account with other Mines users as needed.
