N O T E : Unlike Windows ADIT domain computer users on campus, Ubuntu computer users must manually map their department network file shares and their personal network file shares.
These are commonly referred to the I: drive (or Y: drive) and the Z: drive, respectively.
Ubuntu computers do not use the drive letter convention as Windows computers do.
This document outlines the process of mapping those shares on a Ubuntu computer.
A: Map your department's network file share. (a.k.a. the Y drive or the I drive)
1. Log on to your Ubuntu computer and ensure you have an active network connection.
N O T E : If you want to map these file shares from a computer located off-campus, you must first connect to the campus network with the Global Protect VPN client. If you do not already have the Global Protect client installed, please refer to Remote Access Instructions | MacOS VPN for instructions.
2. To map to your department's network file share (Commonly known as I: or Y: on Windows computers) , open up the Files utility and select Other Locations.
Enter the path smb://files.mines.edu/shared into the Enter server address. . . input box.
Click the Connect button.
The Authentication dialog box opens.
Select Registered User as the Connect As option.
Enter your ADIT user ID in the Username input field.
Enter ADIT in the Domain input field.
Enter your ADIT password in the Password input field.
Select one of the three password caching options that fits your needs.
Click the Connect button at the upper right-hand corner of the dialog box.
If your credentials are valid, a new Files window opens displaying the contents of //files.mines.edu/shared.
You can now browse to the location of your department's file share.
B: Map your personal file share. (a.k.a. the Z drive)
To map to your personal file share (Commonly known as Z: on Windows computers), open up the Files utility.
Select Other Locations
Enter the path smb://home.mines.edu/home/[USERNAME] into the Enter server address. . . input box.
You will substitute your ADIT account user ID for the placeholder [USERNAME] in the input box.
For example, if your ADIT account user ID is ImaUser, then you will enter smb://home.mines.edu/home/imauser
Click the Connect button.
The Authentication dialog box opens.
Select Registered User as the Connect As option.
Enter your ADIT user ID in the Username input field.
Enter ADIT in the Domain input field.
Enter your ADIT password in the Password input field.
Select one of the three password caching options that fits your needs.
Click the Connect button at the upper right-hand corner of the dialog box.
If your credentials are valid, a new Files window opens displaying the contents of your personal file share.
