Install Windows Defender ATP for Mac

First, download the file in the Attachments section on the right. Then, follow the steps below.

  1. You will first need to download the necessary files. Begin by navigating to download.mines.edu/MicrosoftDefender in a web browser.
  2. Underneath "Macintosh Version" click the "Package" link to download the installer for Defender.
  3. Right click "Script" and select "download linked file" to download the script we will use at the end to activate the license.
  4. You should have two items in your downloads folder. First open and run the wdav.pkg

  1. You will receive the window below. Go ahead and follow the instructions to install.

  1. You will be prompted for an Administrative account. This will be an administrative account for the Mac itself. If you are unsure of your admin account you can contact ITS via a helpcenter ticket.

Once Microsoft Defender has finished installing we will need to activate the license. This part may be a little tricky so follow the steps closely.

  1. Open the terminal app. It can be found in the Utilities folder within applications at Applications>Utilities>Terminal. Type or copy and paste this in to the terminal window: cd /users/*username*/downloads. Then press enter. NOTE: Be sure to replace *username* with the username of the account you are currently logged into on your mac. This should look something like the image below

  1. If you see this prompt asking for access to your downloads folder select “OK”

  1. Now type or copy and paste: python MicrosoftDefenderATPOnboardingMacOs.py and press enter.

  1. You will be prompted for an admin password. This is the password for your admin account to the machine. NOTE: When you type the characters will not be displayed. This is OK. It will look blank but it is registering your typing. Simply type your password and press enter.

  1. When your password is accepted it should simply start a new lines as in the image below.
  2. Once the password is accepted and the new line appears you can close the terminal window and restart your machine.

  1. Once the machine has restarted look for Defender ATP in you applications and open it. It will look like a Blue Shield as seen in the bottom right corner of this image. Once open if the application appears similar to what is seen here then you are all finished! If it gives a notice about needing a license then you may need to return to Step 4 and try again. If you continue to have issues please submit a ticket to ITS via helpcenter.mines.edu
