Step-by-Step: How to map a network shared printer on MacOS using LPD/LPR.

Prerequisites:  You must know the name of the print server and the name of the print queue to which you want to map.

1. Map the print queue.

Open up the MacOS System Preferences utility and then open Printers & Scanners.

To add a new printer, click on the + symbol at the lower left-hand corner of the dialog.

Most network served printers on campus are on adminprint.mines.edu, lightning.mines.edu, or pkonica.mines.edu.

Most printers will have a label on them indicating the server name and the print queue name.  Normally anotated for example as \\cyclone\carousel.

Enter the server name into the Address field of the Add dialog.

Enter the printer's queue name in the Queue field

Be sure that the Protocol entry has Line Printer Daemon selected.

Enter appropriate information in the Name and Location fields, then click the Add button.

Most printers have the ability to print on both sides of a sheet of paper.  This is known as duplexing

If your target printer supports this function, select Duplex Printing Unit and click OK.

Your new printer mapping now displays in the Printers & Scanners dialog box.

2. Test the printer mapping.

Double-click on the new printer mapping to open up the printer's job (queue) list.  Select the Printer menu at the top of the screen, and then select Print Test Page.

The printer's job list will show the progress of the print job.
